KW - Congress, Hydrometeorologic data, Sensor removal, Wilderness, Wilderness Act AB - There is a good solution to the problem of retaining some snow sensors in wilderness. However, it will require: 1) legislative action by Congress, 2) a major investment in improving forecasting techniques and hydrometeorologic networks, and 3) a small amount of give and take on the part of the parties involved in the debate. First, Congress needs to make the language in Title III, Section 305 of the Utah Wilderness act of 1984 applicable to the Wilderness Act of 1964 and all subsequent wilderness acts: 'the Wilderness act (1964) shall not be construed to prevent the installation and maintenacce of hydrologic, meteorologic, climatological, or telecommunications facilities, or any combination of the foregoing, or limited motorized access to such facilities when non-motorized access means not reasonably available or when time is of the essence, subject to such conditions as the Secretary of Agriculture and Secretary of the Interior deem desirable, where such facilities of access are essential to flood warning, flood control or reservoir (etc).
