The problem of frost penetration in moist soils is idealized as a problem of heat conduction in a semi-infinite slab of porous material through which a liquid is uniformly diffused. Solution of the heat equation with selected boundary conditions suggests that the depth of the frozen layer increases with the square root of time. Formula development from laboratory data are exhibited. The difficulties in attacking this problem of varying properties of soil classification, and varying quantities of soil moisture and distribution are admitted by the author.Discussions are presented by Dr. J.E. Church and Dr. Robert E. Horton.
