Abstract

Maclure Glacier ia a small cirque glacier at an altitude of 3,600 to 3,800 meters near the crest of the Sierra Navada in Yosemite National Park, Calif. Maclure glacier is the southernmost (lat. 37deg 45min N.) of 4 glaciers in the United States being studied as part of the International Hydrological Decade program. From 1967 through 1972, snow accumulation and snow, ice, and firn-ablation data were collected to determine the annual ice and snow balance for Maclure Glacier. The net water balance for the glacier ranged from +1.2 meters in the heavy snow year of 1967 to -0.8 meters in the dry years of 1968 and 1972.Snow, ice, and runoff data were obtained for an approximate water budget for the Maclure Creek basin including the glacier. Precipitation, air temperature, and windspeed also were measured.
