Abstract

The Soil Conservation Service is currently in the process of implementing an automated westwide snow survey and related hydrometeorological data telemetry system called SNOTEL. This system, to be installed during the next 5 years, will be providing on-call data as frequently as once an hour from 500 key locations in the western United states. These data will be available on a 'near' real-time basis to users and cooperators. This paper describes the data network, type of sensors, communication system, telecommunications network, terminals, asnd computer control system which in total will make up the SNOTEL system.
