Abstract

The purpose of snow surveys and the planning of survey networks are discussed. Factors determining the type of snow course network, the number of snow courses, and measurement schedules are outlined. Criteria for the selection of the snow course location are examined, including; elevation, water production of the area, relation to other snow courses, accessibility, and the physical characteristics of the site. Conditions influencing the accuracy of snow, the number of snow samples taken, the relation between the snow course and its environment, and the marking of sampling points are considered.Discussion by J.H. Doughty-Davies and F.M. Veatch.
