Abstract

The method for forecasting runoff in this British Columbia watershed (580 sq. Mi.; to 7000 feet elevation) is described. The source of data forecasting were snow surveys, precipitation records at the townsite of Powell River, and long-range weather forecasts. An empirical runoff formula was developed from snow survey -precipitation data and curves were constructed showing the net runoff to be expected form the snow water content at the snow courses. The contribution of snowmelt was found to be 1/3 of the total runoff. A sample calculation of expected runoff for 1956 is presented.
