Abstract | Oversnow travel, though a minor segment of the field of transportation, is of such importance to the activity of snow surveying for water supply forecasting as to warrant documentation for historical purposes. This a history of the development of oversnow vehicles. The vehicles are categorized by track type or propulsion systems. Categories are: (1) miscellaneous and prototypes; (2) metal tracks; (3) double-belt tracks; (4) single belt tracks; and (5) propeller driven. The discussion is confined to describing the mechanical aspects of the vehicles with no evaluation in terms of performance. Pictures of thirty-six different vehicles or models are included. |
