Abstract | The forecasting of the seasonal volume of runoff by means of snow survey data made early in the year, before April 1, is discussed. The use of midwinter snow surveys is exemplified from records of a few western streams, and the results are compared with forecasts based on April 1 snow surveys. The results indicate that a forecast based on the maximum value of the snowpack, whenever it occurs, may be superior to a forecast based on the value observed on the same time each year.
