Abstract

Wyoming windshields in Alaska indicate a catch efficiency on the order of 80 to 90 percent of total snowfall rather than only 48 percent, as reported by the U.S. Forest Service's Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station (Sturges 1948). Also, Wyoming windshields afford a catch 200 percent greater than National Weather Service's standard unshielded gages during the November to April coldest period of the winter and 100 percent greater for the whole winter. These assertions are based on a fairly small collection of comparable data. But the implication remains firm that the Wyoming windshield provides the best available estimate of snowfall in windy, exposed and remote locations.
