Abstract

During the winter of 1982 (December - February) the mean snow covered area in North America was the third greatest in the 16 year record (1966 - 1982). In Eurasia the snow covered area was near normal. But the snow covered area in both North America and Eurasia increased significantly over that of the previous year. Assessment of any long term climatic trends must wait extension of the snow cover data base.
