Abstract

SNOTEL data, weather forecasts, and antecedent stream flow are used to predict the severity of flooding in the rain-on-snow zone of the westside of the Cascades in Central Oregon. Simple nomographs developed from historical records allow a rapid prediction of flood hazard. During periods of heavy runoff, the prediction is used to alert road maintenance crews so that measures can be taken to prevent or minimize damage to forest roads and drainage structures.
