Abstract

The density profile of snow packs has become of increasing interest to snow hydrologists in recent years. Isotopic profiling snow gages have produced excellent data at various snow stations; however, none of these are truly portable (at least to the surveyor on skis);A new easily Portable Profiling Snow Gage has been in use since November 1972, at the Central Sierra Snow Laboratory. Fixed tubes were placed at several locations on the snow course and the profile was measured each week at each location. During this past summer, the gage was used on the South Cascade Glacier with a Mt. Rose snow tube instead of fixed tubes.
